Can’t fault this spot for excellent views. Flat pitch and great access to walks all around. Castleton just a short walk downhill for food/shops. Can get very busy, even in times when you would think it’s quiet. A popular spot.

  • 4/5

nice layby and views. Glad I got here early as it fills quickly. hoping for some peace and quiet however some mobile van ran their noisy generator all evening.

  • 5/5

We live locally and wanted to try out our new van. Arrived at dusk and there was plenty of space to park. Already working out what we need to fine tune for future trips.

  • 5/5

Absolutely amazing…vanlifers are all friendly…great little community….spectacular views…really quiet at night…100% will be returning

  • 4/5

wonderful views, great location, but it does slope and it is pretty packed. some people are there for weeks/months at a time

  • 5/5

had a very nice night here, great views and plenty of walking options, peaceful at night.

  • 5/5

Beautiful views, as described, very busy, struggled to find a spot. easy access to Mantor for a sunset walk

  • 5/5

Great spot, fantastic views. was a little busy when we turned up but we got a space no problem. Great for walking or just taking in the view

  • 4/5

good place for stay, amazing views, Mam Tor footpath next to car park. Plenty spaces. At night grop of noisy teens came at 2am but left after one hour, no problems.

  • 5/5

Beautiful view. Leveling blocks are a good choice. At 22:30 an annoying group of boys with their tuned cars parked on the grass right on the edge. They were loud and yelling. They left after 15 min with honking. After that quiet night. Couple of other campers here. Great walks and cycle trails around obviously.

  • 5/5

Lovely views if you park the van the correct way and not to far from Castletown or mam tor.

  • 5/5

Such a lovely park up, many full time van lifers here. Next to Blue Johns Cavern and plenty of walking trails. We joined other van lifers, we all shared diner together and a drink, everyone is very friendly. Beautiful views, sheep, peaceful a night.

  • 4/5

Schöner Ort. Leider etwas schwierig auszugleichen. Wir sind nicht geblieben.

  • 5/5

Lovely free spot, with beautiful scenery! carpark was initially busy when we arrived, but quietened down in the evening.

  • 5/5

Great spot!!! We spent 3 nights here exploring the beautiful valley. Very quiet and relaxing. Lots of walking! Castleton is a busy little village with lots of pubs, shops and cafes. Look after the camping area. Leave it as you find it. Take your rubbish home etc.

  • 5/5

Beautiful camping spot. Some parking spaces aren’t flat but everyone seemed to make do. Lots of other campers so felt safe. Easy access to mam tor walking route. Only downside would be a lack of areas for inconspicuous bathroom stops if you’re yet to buy a portaloo like us!

  • 5/5

what a place to stay one of my all time favourite places to stay will definitely be staying again views to die for lovely walkes nice walk in to Castleton really enjoyed it

  • 5/5

Great spot. The aerial shot in the photos I took when I stayed 02-04-2023. Lots of campervans/Mohomes. Good phone signal on O2. Quiet at night, but busy in the day. Would definitely stay here again.

  • 5/5

Great stay. plenty of room for loads of vans. Nice to see it busy there with allsorts of motorhomes campers and roof top tents. very quiet despite loads of people there. loads of walkers there in the morning. lovely walks. Worth a visit to the caverns and winnats pass while you're in the area.

  • 5/5

another free and peaceful night on this great stretch of road. fantastic walks in all directions. plenty of vans every night. great views.

  • 5/5

Amazing view and quiet spot. Can't fault it.

  • 5/5

Lovely park up - our first night in our van! It’s a dead end road so minimal traffic. There were a few walkers about and only a few other vans so plenty of space. Only a few spaces that are flat as the rest has a slight slope. We visited Blue John Cavern which is on the road. We’ll be back to walk up Mam Tor in the summer!

  • 4/5

Great spot with lovely views. Our first wild camp ! About 20 other vans around us so felt safe enough and still plenty of space. Everyone very friendly and welcoming. A couple of cars did go past pipping about 1am but kids will be kids !

  • 5/5

Great views over the valley plenty of spaces

  • 5/5

Stayed here for 1 night wild camp last night! Loads of places for vans to pull up. Lovely quite spot, perfect location for a sunrise and a hike up Mam Tor or down into Castleton.

  • 5/5

Stayed here one night in September 2022. Was a fabulous place and lots of space. Many people stopping overnight but all were very friendly. The end of the road is a turning area for buses so make sure you don't obstruct it.

  • 5/5

Stayed here on a Thursday evening, 8 other vans. couple of cars going up and down till 11pm, nice and quiet after that. great base for Mam Tor, we got up early and went to top for sunrise. we walked by the spot on Saturday & it was packed with vans! We spoke to staff member from blue John cavern who was litter picking! please help keep this area by taking litter away, even if it isn't yours!

  • 4/5

Lovely spot great views and a great place to enjoy the Peak District for walking mountain biking. You must wander up the hill and see the views over to Edale and Kinder. I just hope it does not get abused by over use.

  • 3/5

Didt want to leave a bad review on this spot but we stopped there last night there was above 30 vans make shift campsites with tarpaulin pulled over cars camp fires & bbq when there a ban in the Peak District the music and partying didt stop untill 4am! then the van at side of us decides to run his engine with radio on at 4am for an hour would try this spot agian but when it's quite and not bucy

  • 4/5

Good spot, but overrun. I stayed at one of the other laybys. quite a lot of cars going by even late. Next time I will stay somewhere else

  • 1/5

arrived late Bank Holiday Monday to find this beautiful area overtaken by some kind vanlife encampment. It looked like some kind of a scene from mad max and very intimidating. complete disregard to the camp fire ban in the peak district. unfortunately this is only going to lead to a parking ban in these beautiful places and Is precisely these encampments that the police & crime bill will be

  • 5/5

Great place. Down a country lane with lots of parking places on the side and at the bottom. The road is a dead end so little traffic noises (only used for camping and to get to Blue John Cavern). Loops back on itself at the bottom so easy to turn around. Lovely views. Stayed 2 nights mid week, nice and quiet and lots of camper vans around so felt very safe and relaxed, but didn’t feel too busy.

  • 5/5

Lovely spot. Pretty flat area off the road. Great views of the Hope Valley. A few other vans but all low key, chilled and friendly. I'll deffo be back.

  • 5/5

Great place, with lovely view of the sunset and sunrise over Winn Hill, met plenty of nice vanners, will definitely be returning

  • 5/5

Stayed 1 night. Great views eastwards over Hope Valley. Gives shelter from westerly winds, but shaded from the evening sun in some places. Lots of friendly campers. Good starting point for walking Mam Tor. There's a path from the end of the road that leads quite steeply to the peak, or follow the road back to the National Trust car park for a shallower ascent. We'd happily stay here again.

  • 5/5

great site, views ace, out the way and a small community without it being like a shanty town! will definitely come again

  • 5/5

Beautiful spot at the bottom of Mam Tor. lots of places to park along this road, very busy when we arrived so a good idea to arrive early. Ideal park up for walking.

  • 5/5

Got here late on a Saturday during Easter weekend. loads of places to park all along the road and easy to find flat bit. No problems staying there, soooo quiet through the night and early morning no facilities, no bins, so take all your rubbish with you! leaving it in a bin bag near the gate to mam tor doesn't mean it will get collected!

  • 4/5

arrived about 7pm plenty of space all along the road. Nice and quite.

  • 4/5

Stayed twice both times on a Saturday night. Arrive at 7-8pm plenty of space. Fairly quiet both times, Few vans around. Lovely views. Would recommend.

  • 4/5

stayed here for 2 nights lovely and quiet 1st nite only 6 campers 2nd night a few cars up & down and 11 campers Parked up. all very friendly. we walked into castleton about 30 mins walk via winnets pass was a killer on the way back up. ideal park up to explore mam tor and nice views sunrise was amazing

  • 5/5

amazing views, loads of other vans about but no noise.

  • 5/5

Stayed here on Monday night. Great spot with amazing views. About 6 other vans parked up overnight so felt secure. Didn’t notice much traffic but it is a dead end. Most spot are on a slope of some sorts but no big problem. Great walks near by. Cavern and cavern cafe/shop was open as well. Great sunrise views.

  • 5/5

Stayed here last night, was a bit windy but a lovely dead end road with not much traffic. Quite a few other campers were there as well. Definitely be going back when the weather warms up for the outstanding views and walks.

  • 5/5

Stopped last night no problems was joined by some more vans

  • 3/5

Great spot off grid and the views are amazing. only thing stopping a more stars was the amount of vehicles driving around all through the night. (it was a Saturday) you would think being a dead end there would be limited traffic. little cafe open during the day.

  • 5/5

Used on Saturday and was very busy showed up about 5pm and got the last spot. Very popular spot but did feel safe and excellent spot for heading up Mam Tor

  • 5/5

We spent the last 2 nights here, great spot, lovely views. Arrived friday lunchtime with only 4 campers there, lovely quiet night. Got very busy Saturday and lots more campers saturday night. Right next to Mam Tor, about 1.5 miles walk into Castleton. Will definitely stay again.

  • 5/5

Great free park up, you get a lot of campers here buts it’s nice and quiet with great views. Will use again for sure. TOP TIP don’t follow your sat nav down the farmers lane

  • 5/5

Great views and good spot for walking Mam Tor. Recommended

  • 3/5

Getting busy as. Bottom was full Friday. Had a Moho turn up late and park next to us. Squoze in. Next day I can hardly open door. Please think before you park. Amazing views. Great area to walk.

  • 5/5

Good spot. Lots of space and pretty flat

  • 5/5

Arrived late in the evening to find many campers pulled up for the night. All considerably spaced allowing privacy. Very peaceful spot however gets busy 10am onwards. Would definitely stop here again

  • 5/5

Stayed here two nights- very busy around 10am with walkers. Other overnight campers were very kind and friendly! Really loved this spot

  • 5/5

Bussy spot in the day, but gets quiet in the evening. Beautiful view.

  • 5/5

Busy but able to find a spot with a great view around 3pm on a weekday. Just a few other overnighters by dusk and a really quiet peaceful night.

  • 5/5

Drive up thru Winnets pass heading to Blue John mines..its just beyond the mines .avoid the bus turning circle as the bus itself parks in that layby! I enjoyed a peaceful nights sleep and a hearty fry up the next morning with no bother. other campers friendly. lovely peaceful area and ideal for a hike up Mam tor summit!!!

  • 5/5

Nice spot once the day trippers have gone. Lovely view over the Hope Valley. A bit too far to walk into Castleton but good WiFi signal.

  • 5/5

This is our go to spot, safe & friendly fellow campers too!

  • 5/5

Great spot for a night stay, beautiful view, when I stayed there were a couple others camping too. Great vibes

  • 5/5

  • 5/5

Fantastic views and a peaceful nights sleep! My first night in the van alone and I felt very safe, lots of other vans parked here and everyone is friendly. Will definitely be back!

  • 5/5

Great place. stayed one night. watched the sunset on Mam Tor. extremely quiet on a night. Will definitely be heading back

  • 5/5

Great spot, peaceful during the week. Please look after this space. Keep it clean and keep it peaceful.

  • 5/5

Good nights sleep very quite with great views into hope Valley. Quite a few vanlifers use this area. Nearly always room for 1 more tho. Please don't park in the bus turning area tho leave that bit clear for the bus driver.

  • 5/5

Excellent spot for the night, lots of other campers around too so wonderful atmosphere!

  • 1/5

Really sad to see this over the weekend over 20 vans, motor homes parked across 5 parking spaces people having music blasting till late beer cans and rubbish left everywhere. Please be respectful or they will stop people parking here!

  • 5/5

Amazing view but you cand find a nice place to parck your camper and have a lovely view till 5 6pm as very busy

  • 5/5

Perfect! Really easy so quiet and so many good hikes

  • 5/5

This place is absolutely stunning a lovely relaxing place, quite alot of campers, theres a bus in the morning that uses the carpark on the end so just be aware that if your parked in the turn area they will beep you! We watched as other campers had to move

  • 5/5

Amazing place to spend the night! Many campers around so feels safe. Lovely views towards Castleton and Hope beyond. Plan to stay here again!

  • 5/5

Great place to stay with the panoramic view. Busy in weekends quiet in week time. We stay for 2 nights. We had BBQ and nice chill. Recommended if you want to go hiking. Great place.

  • 5/5

    Brilliant spot and great views

  • 4/5

Stayed here in 2020. Busy, fabulous atmosphere, with cyclists, hikers, photographers and families. Bit noisy with traffic flying past at speed until early hours. No idea where they were going as the road fell away years ago! Great base for a morning walk up Mam Tor. Good to see campers were really considerate and mostly just enjoying the walks and views.

  • 4/5

Handy little spot for overnight, quiet and good signal

  • 5/5

Beautiful views of Hope Valley. Easy access to Mam Tor and surrounding peaks. Lots of campers and motorhomes about. Busiest park 4 night spot we have visited. Slept soundly. Great spot. Only downside it's not flat and you will need your chxoka!

  • 5/5

Nice quiet place, plenty of space for all sizes of campers

  • 5/5

Absolutely stunning spot, lots of other Motorhomes here, feels like a french aire

  • 4/5

  • 4/5

Great spot with nice view and busy all day. Nice walk to the lovely Castleton village .stay there two night, weekend night it get really loud . Signal was good, the dog love it.

  • 4/5

We have stayed here a number of times. It is quiet with lovely views and usually some other campers about. However arrived today and the lower road is closed and limited space further up. This is because a film set is being built ready for filming in a week or so. Apparently space will be restricted for the next few weeks.

  • 4/5

Great spot to park, many other campers here which was good to see which added some safety value. Cars did drive past during the night but wasn’t too much hassle. Stayed here in January and March 20

  • 4/5

A great spot overlooking Castleton & the Hope Valley with great access to Man Tor and other fantastic walking routes. A good number of available spaces span this road with no parking charges but equally no facilities so it’s wild camping at it’s best. Seems to be a popular choice for campervans so enough people around to make it feel secure but not too much to make it feel overcrowded.

  • 3/5

Off the beaten track, plenty of space only 20 minute walk into castleton, gorgeous sunrise right opposite the van.

  • 5/5

We parked nearer the top of this road as it seemed more level up there. A few cars passed in the evening before bed and then in the morning. We found it quiet and had a lovely night's sleep here. The bottom part was quite busy and looked very uneven.

  • 5/5

Stayed one night, loved it very peaceful busy with campers towards the bottom. Lovely walks and views.

  • 4/5

Busy but quiet. No issues but only a couple of level spots. Better views towards the end on the road at the roundabout

  • 4/5

Great park up. Lots of other vans here. Busy during the day with cars but quiet on the evening. Watched sunrise and sunset on Mam tor. Great scenery. Not very level

  • 4/5

Nice quiet area with beautiful views and easy access to the paths up to the top of the hill.

  • 4/5

It's peaceful, lots of walkers during the day but empty dying the night. A little natural disaster here to look at while you walk. A road that was never finished due to land slides.

  • 5/5

Stayed for one night. Perfect spot! Busy with other vans but quiet. No issues. Lovely sunrise!

  • 5/5

Lovely spot. A few other campers but plenty of room. Great walking from the van in the morning.

  • 5/5

Absolutely gorgeous place to stop! I ended up here for a few days I didn’t want to leave. Little shops nearby enough for 5/10min drive or 30min walk. Toilets in Castleton open 9-6. Amazing walking all around with sensational views. Definitely worth waking up for sunrise.

  • 5/5

Great spot if you like the sound of waking up to spectacular views across Castleton. Very quiet, plenty of space.

  • 5/5

Great little spot. Fairly sloping ground with only a few level spots. Very peaceful nights sleep but exposed to the elements. No through traffic. No facilities and no refuse point that I could see.

  • 5/5

Great stop off with lovely views over the valley and Castleton village. Popular spot though, you won't be alone!

  • 4/5

Stopped here for our first night with a camper, very popular and about 10+ others with the same idea. Definitely one I’d go back to though

  • 4/5

Great spot at the end of a dead end road, near the blue John cavern. arrived at dinner time and there was only a couple of other campervans parked for the night. Very quiet until about mid morning. no facilities.

  • 5/5

Good spot, with nice view, stayed two nights no problem and good access to walks. The Witnass pass is not as bad a it looks and is fine for a long wheel base Renault master.

  • 5/5

Great location nice views towards Castleton. Nice walk along the old Winnats pass. Nice quiet overnight location. bring leveling ramps

  • 5/5

Nice place. Good to lot the dog out a run. 1st night out in our micro camper.(Peugeot expert) Arrived about 6:30pm.deffo coming back

  • 5/5

Great overnight stop with beautiful views and a lovely 6 mile circular walk from the site to the tors and Castleton village.

  • 5/5

We chose this location for our first off site camp yesterday. There were only a couple of other vehicles overnight, however during the evening there was a stream of cars heading down to the turning circle. We stayed at the top parked against the wooden fence opposite the Blue John Cavern. It was perfectly level and had splendid views. Away from all the action lower down we felt safe and secure.
